Recently I viewed a program on TV where they discussed if surgery is the only way to go when a woman has breast cancer and they believe it could be in the Lymph nodes as well, closest to the cancerous breast. Now there is mounting evidence that removal of cancerous nodes are actually unnecessary! In fact they are starting to prove that removing these nodes are doing more harm than good in some patients!
The odds of women developing breast cancer are now 1 in 8 women! Astonishing odds truly and what should we as women be doing about it! We must keep up with the latest reports from both the American and the Canadian College of Surgeons, that is the first place to start! North America is truly working together to try their hardest to solve every woman's breast cancer treatment to ensure survival of all women.
There have been special studies which took place, that advises the Doctors through the College of Physicians about such things as the treatment of breast cancer and now the treatment of the lymph nodes. The lymph nodes are tying into the whole treatment scenario of breast cancer in women. However surgery can be not only disfiguring for a woman but leave her with lymph-edema, a swelling in the arm which is a permanent disfigurement and leaves women with painful sensations, fluid settling in the armpits are more susceptible to infections. There is absolutely no cure for "lymph-edema".
In case you have not been advised previously, the lymph nodes, being small glands play a large roll in the bodies fight of infections and diseases. They contain white blood cells that filter the lymph fluid.
Most surgeons remove the nodes of all breast cancer women, it is standard procedure these days. But recently after numerous studies, it has been proven, that if the cancer spreads to he sentinel nodes (the ones closest to the tumor) and are considered positive, only then will the surgeon do the lymph node surgery!
There was a study commissioned by the National Cancer Institute about the above mentioned breakthrough! A Cancer Chief of the Surgical Oncology Department in Santa Monica, and a leading authority on breast cancer surgery who has written over 400 articles on this subject. These Surgeons and their teams followed 900 patients for approximately 6 years, where the medium age was 50 years old and they all had surgery, radiation and most had chemotherapy, and half of them had their lymph nodes removed.
The results were that NO significant differences had occurred for the recurrence of cancer or overall survival between the two groups. However, the worst part was that the women who had nodes removed had more complications from the surgery, which included infections, swelling, and lymph-edema.. Once published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, this news has been turning the medical community around.
In the 90's, researchers began questioning the Medical wisdom regarding the removal of lymph nodes.
More studies ensued, and from 82.2 percent of women who had the nodes removed, all were still alive and in remission five years later. And 83.9 percent who did not have the nodes removed were also still alive and in remission, it was deemed no significant differences were found!
So with the above reports, removing lymph nodes proved unnecessary due to most of the women having had both chemotherapy and radiology. These treatments in themselves will wipe out the disease in the nodes! Now medical centers are trying to reduce lymph node surgery. A Cancer center in Manhattan is one of them currently.
Recruiting patients for the studies became more difficult as surgeons were uncomfortable with the idea of not removing the lymph nodes. Following a CNN interview, it was determined, that following the 6 years, recurrence only takes place in about 1 percent of women who had the surgery. The surgeons say they are not leaving cancer cells behind, they have just found new ways of treating them. They are being killed with radiation and drugs! The Doctors now believe that it is best to do less surgery in the breast itself, and substitute lumpectomy and radiation for mastectomy as a routine. This is the next step in that evolution as drug therapy gets better with less invasive type drugs, then surgery can become minimal.
What does a woman do who has to decide on the road to take? Just don't think about surgery as a quick fix. It must be discussed with your Doctors, get a second opinion if you are unsure. Prior to your treatments, a great idea is lifestyle changes, which also points to solutions for prevention of cancers including exercise programs in consultation with your Doctor. This is especially important when battling the terrible C disease. Everything in moderation is the key.
Naturally you can stave off cancer with Berries...lots of them, blueberries, cranberries, blackberries, raspberries, and others that are known to have plenty of antioxidants. There are also supplements and all natural treatments that can help you stave off cancer and live longer. The sooner you can make life long changes, the better for your health and piece of mind.
My reason for being so interested in these studies, is the fact that my daughter had to have 20 lymph nodes removed, due to breast cancer, of which only 10 were deemed cancerous. That was how the surgeries were carried out just 3 years ago, remove more than less, to ensure cancer is not present in any lymph nodes. Immediately following the surgery it is essential that an exercise program be followed even before the sutures are removed. Exercises, will also have to be a part of a person's lifestyle to ensure that fluid will never be retained in the armpit or elsewhere. Once lymph-edema is present, it can never be cured and a person will have to do exercise for the rest of their life.
If there is a better way of dealing with cancerous lymph nodes while ensuring the cancer will be gone, at the end of the treatment, why not, it would prevent the possibility of contracting lymph-edema in any case.

I enjoy working on line and doing Marketing for both my website and Affiliate sites.
Affiliates sites are one of the best ways to both learn and to get going on what you feel you will like or love now or in the future. Lending your hands to doing anything is the best way to learn, we built 2 homes and enjoyed doing both and learned one heck of a lot doing so!
If you like to learn new things you surely will, doing online Internet work. It keeps the mind and hands going strong. I had quite a learning curve and am still learning every day. And, I must reiterate, will you change your mind on what you think you want to do, of course you will, many times, that's what makes it so fascinating.
I have had a home business in the Electrical field previously, however the Internet and Marketing on line is very new to me and it is something I really wanted to do, once we put our business as inactive. I prefer working at Home than going out in busy traffic, paying parking, gas and vehicle repairs, not to mention having employees who report to you.
